What is Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)?
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), often referred to as alcohol addiction, alcohol dependence, or alcoholism, is a recognised medical condition that affects how the brain and body respond to alcohol. It is defined by an inability to reduce or stop drinking despite harmful consequences on a person’s health, relationships, or work performance (World Health Organization – Alcohol).
AUD exists on a spectrum, ranging from mild to severe. Common symptoms include strong cravings, increased tolerance (needing more alcohol to feel the same effect), and withdrawal symptoms when alcohol use is reduced or stopped.
An alcoholic may find it challenging to limit their drinking, spend a significant amount of time drinking or recovering from the effects of their misuse, and continue to drink despite knowing the harm that alcohol abuse causes (NHS – Alcohol misuse). At Liberty Home Rehab in Cape Town, we provide evidence-based treatment programmes that help individuals overcome alcohol dependence safely and sustainably.
