Why People Drink Excessively
People drink alcohol for a variety of reasons. In a lot of cases, their alcohol consumption is situational. They’ll have a pint at a pub with their friends or a glass of wine to pair with their dinner when they are at a restaurant.
Regardless of the reasons why people consume alcohol, most of them can control their consumption.
For some people, however, drinking can lead to alcohol addiction, and this is for a variety of reasons.
A lot of people struggle with addiction because of their genetics. Addictive tendencies can be passed down genetically, so a close family member struggling with addiction can increase a person’s risk of substance use disorder.
Some people may also develop an addiction because they use substances like alcohol to cope with a mental health disorder. Over time, they can become reliant on these substances.
Similarly, people may also use substances to cope with an external stressor, such as relationship difficulties or problems at work. This will invariably lead to drug or alcohol addiction.
