How Addiction Affects a Person's Social Life
It’s often the case that a person who struggles with addiction will find themselves isolated from their friends and family. This can happen for various reasons. One reason is that some people who struggle with substance use will often withdraw from friends and family as a means of hiding their addiction or because they prioritise their substance use over socialising.
Another reason that many people who struggle with addiction may find themselves estranged from their loved ones is that those loved ones may recognise the addiction and distance themselves to protect themselves.
Some may also be isolated because some substances can cause a person to act belligerently toward the people around them. As such, many people may distance themselves simply because a person who struggles with addiction can be unpleasant to be around.
