Is Your Substance Use An Issue?
You may think that your alcohol or drug addiction isn’t an issue. You may believe that the only person your addiction affects is you. But that’s not the case. Substance use can directly affect the people around you.
Firstly, when a person is addicted to a substance, acquiring and using that substance becomes the highest priority. Relationships and responsibilities often fall by the wayside in favour of substance use.
Furthermore, some substances can have effects on your mood and personality. An example of this is alcohol. Some people may become more belligerent when under its influence and lash out at the people closest to them.
Substance use also has health consequences. Underlying mental health disorders will invariably worsen as a result of substance use. If there are no underlying conditions, you may develop one, such as anxiety or depression.
There is also the issue of tolerance. When a body acclimates to a drug, the effects are dulled. This can lead to a user intensifying their intake, which puts them at greater risk for overdose.
