Ten Years. That’s how long it took me.

Ten years of late nights, dodgy crowds, and streams of alcohol and various narcotics.

Ten years of shame, guilt, and self-hatred as I spiralled down the bottle and to the very bottom of the barrel.

Ten years until I said ENOUGH.

Ten years until I accepted that I needed help.

Ten years until I had the courage to ask for it.

We all have vices. We all struggle through the constant battle of life. Our stories might be unique, but our journeys are the same.

And the only difference between those that fall and those that rise is support.

We cannot do this all alone. It took me ten years of drug use and hitting rock bottom to realise that.

Let’s go back a step.

I used to work a lot with my hands and built my career in rigging, oil and gas, and maritime. After addiction crippled my ability to keep working, my personal relationships suffered, and financial growth stagnated for years.

After finding my feet in recovery, creating sustainable long-term recovery – dealing with ‘life on life’s terms’. I found myself challenging myself.

Was I living an existence that I could genuinely be proud of?

I felt I would be a hypocrite to my daughter if I suggested she follow her life’s passion and desires, but her father was too scared to take a leap of faith. At the end of 2021, I took this leap of faith and left a well-paying, stable job, and I joined my wife at Liberty Home Addiction Care.

We’ve also come a long way since then. We’ve since started offering end-to-end treatment at our Cape Town facility. Our goal now is to expand our treatment model, and begin opening facilities across Europe to offer people the help they need at a price they can afford.

My experiences showed me that it is very possible to overcome addiction together and that, just as importantly, you can live a fulfilled life without substance or behavioural dependencies. This understanding now fuels me to impart that same knowledge to others facing these same struggles and uplift them out of their situations and back onto their feet.

Everyone fails and makes mistakes sometimes. Our job is to learn from these as best possible and use them as stepping stones to grow and improve. The longest roads begin with that first step.

And, alongside the incredible people at Liberty Home Addiction Care, I am here to help you make yours.

You’re welcome to connect with me here if you think we can collaborate, otherwise, you can check out the Liberty Home website.
