The Link Between Addiction and Mental Health
Mental health and addiction are often interconnected. It’s not uncommon for a person who has an addiction to also present with a co-occurring mental health disorder, which can complicate treatment.
This is because many people who struggle with their mental health turn to alcohol or drugs to cope. For a while, it helps ease their symptoms. However, many eventually develop an addiction, and their psychological well-being can worsen as a result.
It also shouldn’t be ignored that some substances can alter a person’s brain chemistry and the brain’s structure. This can lead to the development of mental disorders.
Regardless of which came first, a treatment programme must also integrate mental health into its approach. Tackling one without addressing the other leaves a person vulnerable to relapsing.
