Rehab Centres in South Africa: How to Choose the Right One

Home Areas we serve Rehab Centres in...

South Africa has hundreds of rehabilitation centres, from free public and NGO programmes to private residential clinics. They differ a lot in registration, medical cover, therapy and aftercare, so it pays to check a few things before you book. This guide sets out what to look for, and how people from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Bloemfontein and the rest of the country come to Liberty Home, our licensed residential clinic in Cape Town.

What to check before choosing a rehab centre in South Africa

  • Registration. Treatment centres must be registered with the Department of Social Development under the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act 70 of 2008. Ask to see the certificate.
  • Medical detox on site. Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines and opioids can be dangerous. Ask who supervises detox, day and night, and what happens if symptoms escalate.
  • Nursing and doctors. Ask whether registered nurses are on duty 24/7 and how quickly a doctor can be reached.
  • Qualified clinicians. Look for HPCSA-registered psychologists and access to a psychiatrist, especially if depression, anxiety, trauma or an eating disorder sits alongside the addiction (dual diagnosis).
  • Programme length and aftercare. A clear plan for after the first 28 days, such as secondary care and a registered halfway house, matters as much as the first weeks.
  • Clear pricing and medical aid. Get a written quote and ask exactly what your medical aid will and won’t pay. See our guide to rehab costs in South Africa.

Public, NGO and private rehabilitation centres

Government and NGO services such as SANCA offer free or low-cost outpatient and inpatient programmes, often with waiting lists. Private rehab centres charge for residential treatment but can usually admit within days and offer more individual therapy and medical support. Choose by clinical need first: if you drink heavily every day or use benzodiazepines or opioids, start with a centre that can manage detox safely.

Liberty Home: one clinic in Cape Town for clients from across South Africa

Liberty Home is a private residential clinic for adults (18+) at 5 Boulder Road, Marina Da Gama, Cape Town, 7945. We treat addiction, mental health conditions and eating disorders, and both our facilities are fully licensed.

  • Medically supervised detox on site for all substances, with referral to hospital only if acute withdrawal escalates.
  • Registered nurses on duty 24/7 and doctors on call 24 hours. Medication is dispensed by registered nurses.
  • Psychiatrist Dr Imraan Tayob, an HPCSA-registered clinical psychologist, social workers and lived-experience professionals.
  • Programmes of 28, 42, 56, 70 and 84 days across Phase 1 to Phase 3. You can also join directly for continued care at the Manor (Phase 2, secondary care) or the Lodge in Kenilworth (Phase 3), the only private registered halfway house in Cape Town.
  • We bill many South African medical aids directly for the programme. Detox nights are not covered by medical aids; we explain what your scheme pays before you are admitted.

Where our clients come from

Getting to our Cape Town rehab centre

Most clients from other provinces fly into Cape Town International Airport; flights from Johannesburg, Durban and Bloemfontein take around two hours. We collect you from the airport at no extra cost, and family members who bring you, visit you or fetch you are collected too. Treatment away from home also puts distance between you and the people and places linked to using.
