Rehab in South Africa from the UK: a private clinic in Cape Town

Liberty Home is a private, registered addiction and mental-health clinic in Cape Town. We treat adults (18+) from the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and South Africa. If you are looking at rehab in South Africa for yourself or a family member, this page sets out what we offer, what it costs in pounds and how we meet the UK government’s checklist for choosing a clinic.

At a glance

  • Registered: full licence from South Africa’s Department of Social Development (DSD), valid to 2031.
  • Medically supervised detox on site for all substances. Registered nurses are on duty 24/7 and dispense all medication; doctors are on call 24 hours. Acute cases are referred to hospital.
  • Detox: £260 per night. You get a full written quote for the whole programme before you book.
  • Airport transfers included: we collect you from Cape Town International and take you back, and the same goes for family who bring you, visit or collect you.

  • Talk to us: WhatsApp +27 84 775 8623 or use the enquiry form.

Why UK families choose rehab in Cape Town

  • No wait: private residential treatment in the UK can mean waiting or very high fees. We can usually admit quickly once a medical assessment is done.
  • Distance from triggers: time away from the people, places and routines linked to drinking or drug use helps you focus on recovery.
  • Small time difference: Cape Town is 1 to 2 hours ahead of the UK, so calls home and with your GP are easy.
  • Direct flights: London to Cape Town takes about 11 to 12 hours.
  • One continuous programme: detox, residential treatment and a step-down stay in our own halfway house, Liberty Home Lodge.

How we meet the FCDO checklist

What it costs

Medically supervised detox costs £260 per night (R4,500 / €260). The cost of the full programme depends on how long you stay and your room. You get a full written quote before you book, including what is and isn’t included. Read more in our guide to rehab costs in South Africa and how they compare with rehab costs in the UK.

Paying from the UK: UK clients pay privately. The NHS does not fund treatment abroad, and UK private medical insurance rarely covers rehab outside the UK. If you have a policy, ask your insurer in writing before you book.

Rehab abroad from the UK: why Cape Town

If you’re looking at rehab abroad or addiction treatment abroad, Cape Town gives UK clients English-speaking care, a 1–2 hour time difference and direct flights of about 11–12 hours. Admission is often possible within days. A stay away from home also puts distance between you and day-to-day triggers. If you’re comparing London clinics with treatment in Cape Town, our London guide sets out some of the local options.

Affordable rehab abroad: what it costs compared with the UK

Private residential rehab in the UK typically costs £12,000 to £40,000+ for 28 days (UK rehab costs). At Liberty Home, medically supervised detox is £260 per night. You get a full written quote for your programme before you book. Airport collection and drop-off are included, for you and for family.

Our programmes

We run 28-, 42-, 56-, 70- and 84-day programmes across Phase 1 to Phase 3, treating addiction, mental health and eating disorders. You do not have to start with Phase 1 (primary care) at Liberty: you can come directly for continued care in Phase 2 (the Manor, secondary care) or Phase 3 (Liberty Home Lodge in Kenilworth, tertiary care). After treatment at the Manor, you can step down to Phase 3 at the Lodge before flying home. If drinking is the main problem, read our page on alcohol rehab abroad for how detox and treatment work for UK clients.

Our team

Our psychiatrist is Dr Imraan Tayob. He leads psychiatric care in Cape Town for clients who come to us from the UK. He works with our medical doctors, social workers and lived-experience professionals. Registered nurses are on duty 24/7, and doctors are on call 24 hours. Both of our facilities are 100% licensed.

Flights, visas and time difference

Cape Town is 1 hour ahead of the UK in British Summer Time and 2 hours ahead in winter. Check the visa you need on GOV.UK and with the South African High Commission before booking. The FCDO advises that longer residential stays may need a medical treatment visa. Don’t stop alcohol or benzodiazepines suddenly before you travel; detox is done safely with us.

Aftercare back in the UK

Before you leave, we agree a discharge and aftercare plan with you, and you can step down to Phase 3 tertiary care at Liberty Home Lodge before flying home.
