Alcohol Rehab Abroad from the UK: Residential Treatment in Cape Town

Liberty Home is a private residential clinic in Cape Town that treats alcohol addiction, other addictions, mental health conditions and eating disorders in adults aged 18 and over. If you’re in the UK and thinking about alcohol rehab abroad, for yourself or someone in your family, this page explains how alcohol detox and treatment work with us, what’s included and how to arrange an assessment. For the full picture of travelling from the UK, see our main page on rehab in South Africa from the UK.

Why people from the UK look at alcohol rehab abroad

For many families, time away from home is part of the point. A stay in Cape Town puts distance between you and the pubs, routines, people and pressures linked to your drinking, and gives you a few weeks where recovery is the only job. If you’re also comparing clinics closer to home, our guide to drug and alcohol rehab in London sets out some of the options.

Alcohol detox abroad: supervised and on site

Stopping drinking after heavy, daily use can be medically dangerous. Withdrawal can cause shaking, sweating, anxiety, seizures and, in severe cases, delirium tremens. Please don’t stop drinking suddenly before you travel without medical advice. Detox is done with us, under medical supervision.

  • On-site detox for all substances, including alcohol
  • Registered nurses on duty 24/7, and doctors on call 24 hours
  • Acute withdrawal is referred to hospital

What alcohol rehab abroad looks like at Liberty Home

After detox, treatment continues in a structured residential programme. We run 28-, 42-, 56-, 70- and 84-day programmes across three phases:

  1. Phase 1, primary care. Detox where needed, stabilisation, assessment and intensive therapy.
  2. Phase 2, secondary care at the Manor. 5 Boulder Road, Marina Da Gama, Cape Town, 7945.
  3. Phase 3, tertiary care at the Lodge. Step-down living with clinical support at 15A Gibson Road, Kenilworth.

Phase 1 is not a prerequisite. If you’ve already been through detox or primary treatment in the UK, you can come directly into Phase 2 at the Manor or Phase 3 at the Lodge. See our phases of recovery.

Treatment combines individual therapy, group work and family involvement, with approaches such as CBT, DBT and motivational interviewing.

Drinking and mental health: treated together

Heavy drinking often sits alongside depression, anxiety or trauma. Our psychiatrist, Dr Imraan Tayob, works with our medical doctors, social workers and lived-experience professionals, so both sides are treated at the same time. More on dual diagnosis treatment and our team.

Licensed and medically covered

Both of our facilities, the Manor and the Lodge, are 100% licensed. Our registrations and scope of care are on our licensing and clinical governance page. If you’re comparing clinics abroad, ask every clinic for its licences and for who provides medical cover at night.

Is alcohol rehab abroad right for you?

Rehab abroad suits adults who are ready to spend a few weeks away from home and who are medically stable enough to fly. We assess everyone first. Our admissions team will ask about your drinking, your health and any medication, and will tell you honestly whether our setting fits. If it doesn’t, we’ll say so.
